“Francis wrote that when we stop seeking shelter and instead “enter into the reality of other people’s lives,” then our lives become “wonderfully complicated.” God is found there. It’s wonderful. But it’s also complicated.”

“Francis warns against the temptation to “keep the Lord’s wounds at arm’s length” and seek shelter “from the maelstrom of human misfortune.”

This is our faith. Crucifixion — and resurrection.

Interesting. I just wrote to a young Jewish convert about senseless slaughter. I reminded her that we live in a fallen, sinful world since our first parents succumbed to the temptation of the evil one. We live where blackened hearts and souls desire most of all to remove all sources of light.

Our hearts cry out “why,” but we are asking the wrong question. Rather, we should ask what can we do to help. Prayer. My mind always go to prayer. We cover the living with prayers for comfort and peace. We pray for the young woman whose life, in our understanding, was robbed of her life. We pray for whoever is responsible to come forward and accept the consequences of his/her actions. Lastly, we pray for ourselves that we will not be overtaken with anger and bitterness and directing our grief inappropriately upon innocent others.

While this may seem inappropriate, may we pray “bless them and change me” for otherwise we cannot become instruments of peace.

May Angels escort that young woman to a place of light and refreshment and to see the beatific vision of God.
