Wisdom Through Action
*Doing* is the greatest teacher.
Jesuits take a vow of poverty, but Jesuit training is not cheap. We spend many years in school. Higher education is expensive.
Fortunately, we have generous benefactors. I pray for them regularly. Their support is necessary for our lives.
But here’s the thing that makes it awkward: The most formative parts of my training were also the cheapest.
This isn't a knock on the places where I studied. I had a good experience learning philosophy and theology.
Still, I grew more as a Jesuit while teaching at Jesuit high school in Tanzania and serving as the editor-in-chief of The Jesuit Post. Putting knowledge into action served as the greatest teacher.
Something tells me this isn't unique to Jesuit formation.
New parents can read about what to expect when they’re expecting, but they don’t really learn how to be a parent until that baby is born.
