For many, today is just another Monday. For others, it might be the first day of school. For Catholics, today is the solemnity of the Assumption.
It was also on this day that Saint Ignatius and his first six companions took vows together in a partnership that would become the Society of Jesus. It has traditionally been the day in many parts of the world when Jesuits take their first vows.
I could not know what would await me in Jesuit life when I took vows on this day thirteen years ago.
Mary, too, could not have known what she was getting into when she gave her fiat. But she said yes. And after a lifetime of yeses, God raised her, body and soul, into heaven.
Married couples remember their wedding anniversary, just as August 15 has a special significance for me.
But commitments are a daily endeavor. Even if today is just another Monday, it is a day when we are to give our yes to what truly matters.
